The wooden barkentine, Gazela Primeiro, was originally built to fish for cod in the Grand Banks. Now owned and operated by the Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild, a nonprofit volunteer organization, the Gazela sails as a goodwill ambassador for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the Ports of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Camden, New Jersey. Our mission extends beyond historic preservation to community outreach through such activities as maritime education of disadvantaged youth. Gazela has been featured in several major motion pictures including "Interview with the Vampire" and "The Widow of St. Pierre", as well as several documentaries including "The Irish in America".
