(ALCAi)

R/V Alca i., launched in 2003, was designed as a research vessel, supporting SCUBA, for rocky inshore work in the Subarctic and Arctic. The hull of Alca i. is plank-on-frame, heavy construction, with frames and floors of epoxy-laminated white oak backed up with monel or 316 stainless fastenings. The white oak, 2-3 foot square cross section keel, is straight and bears a 4000 lb., steel I-beam shoe with 8000 lbs. of lead ballast. The hull is strip-planked of two-inch red oak, using bronze, grip- fast nails and epoxy, and is double sheathed, inside and out with epoxy saturated glass mat (four layers at the water line). The hull has eight, water tight bulkheads, with both independent and central bilge-pumping. The aft cabin is a combination laboratory and dive facility. The schooner rig provides an easily handled means of range extension in remote waters as well as stability. Although the basic crew is professional, the vessel typically caries 2-3 students/technicians that provide SCUBA and lab support; the students receive sailing and general maritime training.
