Halifax will host the first joint Sail Training International/American Sail Training Association annual conference and the first Sail Training International conference to be held outside Europe on November 14 and 15, 2008. 400 - 500 delegates from close to 30 countries are expected to attend the conference which will take place at the Marriott Harbourfront Hotel. More than half those attending are expected to be sail training tall ship operators from around the world, with the balance representing ports that host Tall Ships® events.

The Waterfront Development Corporation Limited will support the joint Sail Training International/American Sail Training Association conference with funding assistance and logistics. Sail Training International has committed funds for a bursary programme to subsidize the attendance of sail training operators from around the world outside North America.

“Halifax was a great host port for Tall Ships® 2000 and has been a very successful TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® port twice before. WDCL's long term plan includes some bold and ground-breaking initiatives we will showcase at our conference this year in Europe,” said Nigel Rowe, President and Chairman of Sail Training International. “Bringing our conference to Halifax next year is one of a series of initiatives we have embarked on to extend our global reach and influence, working with our member national organizations.”

“The American Sail Training Association is a founder member of Sail Training International. The joint venture on this year's conference will strengthen our links with the international sail training community as a precursor to the Tall Ships® Atlantic Challenge 2009,” said Mike Rauworth, Chairman of the American Sail Training Association.
