The Bayshore Center at Bivalve is seeking qualified applicants for the Deckhand/Educator position aboard the AJ Meerwald for the 2018 sailing season. The AJ Meerwald is a restored 1928 Delaware Bay oyster schooner that conducts educational programs, charters, and public sails in various ports in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and the Chesapeake Bay. Responsibilities of a Deckhand/Educator include participating in onboard and shore-based programming and participating in vessel maintenance and operations. A strong environmental ethic, plenty of stamina, flexibility, and a positive attitude are required. Environmental education experience and experience working aboard a traditionally rigged sailing vessel are strongly recommended. This is a paid position, with room and board provided aboard the AJ Meerwald. Position runs through early November.

Spirit will be operating on the U.S. eastern seaboard from May through October as a school ship with Cadets from the Citadel, the military college of South Carolina. Ideal candidates would have experience in traditional sailing vessels, marine diesels, and basic shipboard systems, the desire and aptitude to train and teach students in a working ship environment, as well as the motivation to be an integral member of the Spirit and Citadel’s combined mission. We offer competative wages and complete travel costs to and from the vessel. This position is open immediatly.
