The schooner SULTANA is currently seeking a Chief Mate. Employment for this position begins in December or January. SULTANA’s Chief Mate is a full time position eligible for health care and retirement benefits. During the 2018 season SULTANA will travel the full length of the Chesapeake Bay, visiting numerous ports in both Maryland and Virginia. SULTANA will work with over 4,400 students and teachers operating many educational day sails as well as 3-8 day live-aboard programs. A minimum USCG 50 ton Inland license is required. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree and prior educational/sailing experience are preferred. Applicants must have strong communication skills and an active interest in education. Crew members often work 5-day weeks, receive competitive compensation and are provided with a private bunk on board the schooner as well as space in SULTANA’s new crew apartment in downtown Chestertown, Maryland.

We are now working out of Bridgeport CT teaching the history of the Amistad on day sails with area schools. We are currently in need of a top- notch licensed first mate ASAP , to help us finish out our season and down-rig. The ideal candidate is a seasoned tall ship sailor, affable with great personal skills that is able to lead the crew in sailing, rigging and maintaining this fine ship. We are a dedicated crew, working hard to bring Amistad back to its former glory and developing a great program schedule so that this beautiful vessel can continue to carry out its crucial mission.
