Maintenance work goes without saying and includes down-rigging the ship at the end of the sailing season. Our fall itinerary includes the Old City Seaport Festival in Philadelphia, the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race and Sultana's Down-rigging Weekend. Under the direction of the maintenance coordinator, the winter crew will participate in a variety of maintenance tasks needed to keep a historic wooden vessel sailing. Such tasks may include: sanding, painting, varnishing, cleaning, organizing, moving wood, shoveling snow, breaking ice, and various small carpentry projects. The winter crew should be ready to work long hours outside in the cold. Living space at a crew apartment and a limited food budget are included. There is no cook hired for the winter, so the maintenance coordinator and crew decide together whether to have shared or individual meals with the allotted funds. Applicants must have a willingness to work in the cold. Experience with paint, varnish, woodworking, and power tools are highly preferred.

They will be responsible for training and overseeing all of the winter work, setting up the shop in early November, and keeping track of the of the maintenance done in the maintenance log. At the end of the winter, a report of the work accomplished is expected. The maintenance coordinator is responsible for setting the tone for the winter crew.
