The schooner SULTANA is currently seeking a Cook for its 2017 season. Employment for this position begins in March and continues through November. During the 2017 season, SULTANA will travel the full length of the Chesapeake Bay, visiting numerous ports in both Maryland and Virginia. SULTANA will work with over 4,500 students and teachers doing educational day sails as well as 3-8 day live aboard programs. The Cook will also be responsible for maintaining a clean and well-organized galley and for all provisioning. Now sailing! With a successful season of summer programs behind us we are now looking to fill some longer term roles and to broaden our leadership positions as we head south for the winter. The position of bos'n is open immediately, and will run until April 28, with the option to extend longer. The ship is currently in yard, and will depart Rhode Island in January, sailing to Florida via Bermuda. Programs will run out of Florida to ports including the Dry Tortugas, Bahamas, and Cuba. The ship will return to Rhode Island in April. This is a large, full-rigged ship, so the bosun must have excellent organizational as well as marlinespike ability, with square-rig experience. The ship sails north this summer and fall to the Arctic Ocean, Greenland, and the Northwest Passage on a high profile research expedition in conjuncture with the University of Rhode Island, and you will have a berth secured on that voyage if you wish. Job includes keeping the ship's galley organized and clean, provisioning the galley once a week, preparing 2-3 meals daily for 10-20 crew members with various eating requirements, cooking meals and snacks during offshore transits, standing watches if needed, serving drinks and snacks in the galley during charters and day sails and for special events, and maintaining an enthusiastic, flexible, and energetic disposition. Room and board provided on the ship. Must enjoy being with people and working with kids. Must be willing to undergo a USCG drug test as well as a criminal background check if requested.
