Winter Apprentices work for one to two months alongside the crew of the Clearwater under the direction of the maintenance coordinator in Kingston, NY. Apprentices are responsible for participating in a variety of maintenance tasks needed to keep a historic wooden vessel sailing. Such tasks may include: sanding, painting, varnishing, cleaning, organizing, moving wood, shoveling snow, breaking ice and various small carpentry projects. Winter Apprentices should be prepared work long hours outside in the cold. Living space at a crew apartment and a limited food budget are provided, along with a stipend of $100 per week. Applicants must be willing to work outside in cold weather. Experience doing maintenance projects is a plus, but will train the right person. Eagerness to learn new skills and be a part of the Clearwater community is essential.

This is an excellent opportunity for aspiring professional mariners to acquire practical vessel repair and maintenance experience. Working in conjunction with PSPG's shipwright and committed volunteer membership, interns learn a broad array of skills, from plank replacement and caulking, to welding and blacksmithing. Prior repair and maintenance experience is not required, though it is a plus. Housing is provided aboard one of the Guild vessels, as is a weekly stipend. Interns also receive membership in the Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild, and will be eligible to sail aboard Gazela during her 2015 sailing season. Positions are available immediately and running through March 2015, with a minimum time commitment of one month. They will establish procedures and record keeping for mechanical systems.
