The Engineer is responsible for maintaining in working order, and repairing as necessary, all shipboard electrical and mechanical systems as well as piping, tank age and pumps. The Engineer is responsible for keeping a neat and tidy engine room, maintaining an inventory of appropriate spare parts and supplies, filters, lubricants, fuel, and potable water. The Engineer is required to keep an Engineer’s Log to record all maintenance and repairs as well as maintaining an ongoing list of engineering related projects needing to be done and issues needing to be addressed. The ENGINEER is a member of the Lady Washington/Hawaiian Chieftain Committee.

The Mate is second in command aboard Lady Washington/Hawaiian Chieftain and works closely with the Master to ensure safe and profitable operation of the vessel. The First Mate provides direct oversight and is actively involved with ongoing maintenance, restoration, and crew training. With the Master’s guidance, the First Mate is responsible for crew duty assignments including the daily watch bill, emergency station bill, and sailing stations. The First Mate serves as ship’s Safety Officer and is a member of the Lady Washington/Hawaiian Chieftain Committee.
Minimum Requirements: 100 Ton U.S.C.G. Mate’s license appropriate for the intended route.
License must be endorsed for Sail or Aux. Sail Vessels.
Ability to perform the duties of any ship’s officer if needed

The schooner SULTANA is currently seeking Deckhand/Educators for its fall 2010 sailing season. Employment for these positions begins at the end of August and continues through mid-November. During the fall of the 2010 season, SULTANA will visit multiple ports in Maryland and Virginia to conduct our award winning educational history and ecology program. We will also be participating in the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree and prior educational/sailing experience are preferred. Applicants should have strong communication skills and an active interest in education. Crew members work 5-day weeks, receive competitive compensation and are provided with a private bunk on board the schooner as well as space in SULTANA’s crew apartment in downtown Chestertown, Maryland.
