Mate: Oversight of crew and volunteers. Previous time as Mate and license desirable but not required.
Educator / Deckhand: Responsible for delivery of on-board educational program, sailing of the vessel, maintenance, etc. Degree or pursuit of degree in marine science preferred.
SoundWaters homeport is a 60-minute train ride to NYC. All crew receive stipend plus room and board.

The Steward provisions and prepares meals for an average of 35 people per day, but up to 100 people for one meal on daysails (usually a big stew). Occasionally, crew and trainee numbers on voyages can be as high as 45 people onboard, but less than 30 or more than 40 is very unusual.
The Steward prepares meals in a small galley with a wood-burning stove while sailing on voyages, and prepares meals in the Erie Maritime Museum\\\\\\\'s kitchen on shore while the ship is at home in Erie. To keep a hearty bunch of square-rig sailors and trainees happy, meals must be hot, appetizing, in ample quantities, and on time. Also, the steward manages a substantial budget and up to five assistants who help with pre-meal set-up and post-meal dishes each day.
